Foresight Is 20/20
Of course we’ve all heard that “hindsight is 20/20.” That expression exists because it’s easy to see our mistakes after something has gone wrong.
At your company, when people’s livelihoods and thousands – and more likely millions – of dollars are at stake on any given project, you can’t afford to diagnose mistakes after they happen. You need foresight that’s 20/20...not hindsight.
That’s why we at EngineeringDesignJobs.com urge our clients to be prepared.
Before I came to EngineeringDesignJobs.com, I had the opportunity to work with some of the best Recruiters and Consultants in Construction Executive Search. I determined that the basis of their success was in knowing the players in the industry, building relationships with them and continuously gathering more and more information about their territory and field. Beyond my immediate searches, I spent hours just talking to people who I may be able to help in the future. A casual conversation often led to my getting to know three or four viable candidates whose career goals might match some future need.
Perhaps I didn’t need a PM that day, but I sure needed to know as many PMs as possible: I wanted to have strong candidates to draw on when the need arose. I tried to stockpile talent – names, resumes, information – so I was prepared for the next venture that awaited our clients.
That’s why it’s so short-sighted when a company has a blanket response of “we are not hiring” when great candidates come their way. Perhaps a company is not prepared to hire a candidate that particular day … but no client should deny themselves access to a great foreman or super or PM in this candidate-short market. A new project – and serious new personnel needs – are only a day or a week away.
I receive calls from panicked clients all the time who need someone yesterday. And while my colleagues here and I can help you get in touch with people immediately, you can remove yourself from the roster of the panicked by building a database of candidates to draw from before the need becomes desperate.
Answering those greatest needs starts with a pool of likely resumes to look through. Remember the resources that are available to you through EngineeringDesignJobs.com. With your subscription and if you have chosen resume searching, you now have ten candidate alerts. This feature allows you to target groups of engineering professionals in your field. It enables you – with almost no effort - to generate a constant flow of new potential candidates. The beauty of Candidate Alerts is that you are notified within hours of job seekers registering with EngineeringDesignJobs. You are the first to know when that person has made that decision to move on and pursue new opportunities.
You are in a tough and extremely competitive business. And if you’re in business, you’re designing something. If you’re designing something, then you’re probably also preparing for the next project. Don’t forget to focus on staffing: be prepared for change and growth, as that is the nature of engineering. That’s looking ahead, with 20/20 Foresight.
You design buildings.
