A Site to Behold
If you read The Wall Street Journal, you may already know what I’m about to tell you. According to an article published on October 9, 2007 in that distinguished newspaper, the large and multi-disciplined job-search sites such as Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com have flattened out in sales as specialized job sites have claimed a greater share of the market. That is not news to those of us at EngineeringDesignJobs.com. We work hard every day in your market and we know the business (and only the engineering/construction business), and that’s why traffic on EngineeringDesignJobs.com grew by over 100% last year and is on track to do the same in 2007.
Listen … Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com and other equivalent sites are marvels: people nationwide and the world over can look for anything and anywhere related to work, and that’s a great service.
But, for your purposes and for your needs, our site is better. And that statement is not based on the calculus of lower prices compensating for fewer hits, etc. It’s based on something much more important than that: our site is better when you need to meet a solid professional engineer to help make your company succeed and grow.
EngineeringDesignJobs.com is the website that you should use to find the candidate that you need. Here’s why.
Let’s say you need to find an Engineer. You log into one of the giant, catch-all websites and type in “ENGINEER.” Instantly, thousands of candidate names and their resumes will leap onto your screen. That would seem to be a good thing.
But here are some of the Engineers you’ll meet:
-- Artie, Engineer for the IT department on State Street in Walla Walla.
-- Karen, Engineer team leader for the Montpelier Ballet Center.
-- Vijay, ENGINEERING A BETTER YOU initiative at the Health Center in Baltimore.
Undoubtedly, there are many great candidates among the thousands in those databases, but weeding through hundreds of irrelevant resumes to find the right person costs you money and time. And calling into one of those massive job boards and waiting until a human being actually picks up the phone to offer you help costs you – you guessed it – more money and more time.
So call EngineeringDesignJobs.com. Your call will be routed very quickly to one of our trained and dedicated staff, depending on what part of the country you’re calling from. If you call from Walla Walla, you’ll talk to Sam Wolfe. Calls from Montpelier go directly to Ali Landers. And Kevin Donochod loves to chat with companies who call from Baltimore that need an Engineer, pronto.
We work only in Engineering Design. We can’t find the right person to help run a blood drive, but we can find an Engineer who knows how to design your next project.

Bottom Feeders
Why do only the weakest candidates apply for my jobs? Why do we get bottom feeders?
These questions come to us at EngineeringDesignJobs.com fairly frequently. If you sometimes feel that you don’t get a good response to your job posts, and the candidates that do apply are unacceptable, maybe it’s time to review your job posts and what you’re saying. You want to attract the best talent … so, are you saying the best things?
I’ve always liked to fish, and sometimes I see a similarity in fishing and finding good candidates. When I go fishing, I don’t just put the first thing on the hook that I find in my tackle box. I think about what I’m fishing for, make sure I have the appropriate bait and prepare to be successful before I even put my line in the water. If nothing is biting or all I get are little ones, I make changes.
These same principles – being prepared and adaptable - are true in looking for employees.
I know you don’t have time, deadlines loom, and you’re already spending all your waking hours at work … but if you want to get better candidates, you need to do something.
Attracting better candidates is really pretty easy if you remember these two points.
First, always remember that your job post is a marketing piece. Talk about your company and why it is a good place to work.
Second, say what is important in the first couple paragraphs. Be concise! Remember, candidates will spend less than 10 seconds looking at a job post. If they don’t see anything that excites them about the position, they go on to the next job post.
You have ten seconds to hook a big fish. Prepare a posting and a company profile that will make your company stand out, in a short time.
Remember that candidates - especially the good ones - have numerous options in today’s job market. You want to entice the top candidates to apply. Make this task easier by spending a couple of minutes polishing your job posts to attract the best! Who knows, if you spend a few minutes doing this now, you may even be able to take a couple of days to go fishing later.
